    Assuming you are the one who sent the original resume and the one applying, I would suggest sending something short but to show your appreciation.
    You might send something like:
    Dear Ms./Mr. blah-blah;
    Thank you very much for reviewing my resume and forwarding the same to the department director. I am eagerly waiting for a favorable reply, but in the mean time, if there is anything I can do or supply more information, please let me know. Thank you again.

    Please remember, this is a business communication and you are writing to a person who has some say in your future with the company. Just “thank you” or “thanks” (as you are casually replying to an e-mail from your friend) are considered very inappropriate.
    Good luck!

  • I think it depends. Was this a form letter that they send to everyone who applies, or did you have some sort of personal communication with the HR person? I would email back something brief like “thank you. I look forward to hearing from him/her.”

  • Of course send a thank you. Add that if there is any further information that you can provide to contact you.

    Just something simple like “Thank you for taking care of that” will work.
