Lawyers make good money, but not if you are a public defender, so it would depend on how sucessful you are at your job.
Accountants start off like the average business degree and they have to work there way up. The controllers at my company and the HR Managers are the same grade level.
The VP of HR at my company does make more than the VP of Finance. It would all depend on the company you work for, how well you do, how much you advance in your career etc.
I would also like to comment on one of the above answers. When you get an HR degree and an Accounting degree you take the same business classes until the very end. Then you take a few classes the concentrate on your major. There are right answers in HR, HR is about laws and regulations and how to follow them so that your company will not get sued. Maybe you should know a little more about a position before commenting on it.
If you are a people person, go for HR, it is not cushy, you have to deal with sticky situations, and disgruntled workers. At times you are definetly a punching bag even if you had nothing to do with the situation. If you are not a people person and you like numbers go with an Accounting degree.
it is not always a matter of the most money but what are you
most suited for. if you get a real charge from numbers and
manipulating them one way and then another, then you might
be suited to be an accountant. if you are good with people
and infinitely patient with their petty gripes; and of you have
the ability find a solution that makes each party think they
got more of their way than the other then you might be a good
human resources manager. if your passion is young people
and watching them learn new things, then you are a teacher
and only need to get the credentials. each profession has it’s
good and bad points. you can research which has the
highest salary, but in the end the question is which are you
as an individual most suited for. good luck and God bless.
Lawyers and Accounts are the top.
ignore salary…money is NOT everything… do something instead which you like & enjoy.. and you will be rewarded far more.
Highest salary? Best type of work? FORGET THIS IDEA!!!
The best career is one in which you have an aptitude and passion for.
Who says you have to decide on a degree this year? I wanted to be a researcher and an anthropologist from the time I was about 9 years old. I tossed it away because my grandmother told me there was no money in it; that it wasn’t practical. Now over 20 years later my only true passion still lies in researching people and how they lived. It isn’t work to me. I wish I had gone into the anthropology program instead of picking a “safe” major.
If you are pressured to pick a major, you are one more person who has just proven my point that people shouldn’t commit to college just because it is expected of them.
HR, its cushy but pays good wack and they are always the last to be fired, because they make the redundancy decisions.
The exams and qualifications are easy because they are all waffly essay based. No real right answers.
Law and accountancy is tough and Hard work.
EDIT********
Athomas
DONT INSULT ME I have 28 years of international Accountancy, Law, HR and production qualifications and experience , working in Coca Cola, BP, Hilton , Morgan Stanley………you my friend had to ask in another question “oohh what does a HR manager at Walmart earn….” you have no experience to comment, so dont dare call up another contributor just because you dont agree with them
The questioner asked a question , i gave my advice you are wlecome to give yours but NOT TO DEGRADE other contributors.
I’LL BE WATCHING YOU CLOSELY.
tosser (what the hell is a HR generalist anyway??? HA HA HA)
I will go with law, it’s something different to do everyday, different cases to solve, and surely heaps of money. I know someone who got $200k payrise in one year. how is that for some bling bling.hehehe
good luck
I’m the exact same, only i’m 21 and left school early due to being young and stupid, i am currently taking my GCSEs at night classes as i have two little boys and i start college in September to do A level math and art & design onto higher education, then it is on to university for 7 years to become an architect!!!
I chose this as it is very well paid and i am interested in this sort of thing, i’m also better on the art side of things then say science for example so obviously you have to do something you have an interest in, something that will be financially rewarding( you don’t want to spend years studying at college and university to be on minimum wage) and something you are pretty good at or have good skills in that field
Maybe you should go to your local college and have a careers interview with a careers advisor, they will be able to help you more with your options
Good luck and i hope you achieve your goals xx
What are naturally better at and more interested in. That will gain you better income.
Law and Accountancy are probably the best paid, but in my opinion Social work would be much more rewarding.
A little general advice – don’t just go for the highest payed profession. Enjoying your work is far more important. Infact in my experience if you enjoy what you do the money will follow.
I think you should pick accountancy. Typically all the other positions are working with people and their lives. Since you are challenged in making decisions for your own life and your choice may be swayed by monetary benefits, then you may be better suited to go into a career where you’re only dealing with numbers. I’m not trying to be harsh, the world takes all kinds of people to operate and you don’t want to be a square peg in a round hole.
i was beginning to reckon i might be the sole lady which cared about this, at least currently i realize im not crazy
i will be sure to go and visit some various threads after i get a bit of caffeine in me, it’s tough to read with out my coffee, I was really late last night playing zynga poker and after getting my fill with a few brewskies i ended up melting away all my zynga poker chips adios for now
