Ok, I had an interview and it went really well. I got a tour of the place, met the Director of Operations and was there for 2 hours. I got a phone call the very next morning from the HR manager, which was the person I spent most of interview. He said that I did an “outstanding job”. This was pretty much what he said to me -> “I want you to know that you are a very stong candidate for this position. Both the Director of Operations and I thought you were outstanding and would be a great fit for our organization. There is one other candidate with a slight edge over you, ONLY because of her background. You do not lack anything that we are looking for. I want you to really be proud of yourself for the interview and keep in mind that you are definately a strong candidate with this position. We’ll see where this goes.”
What does this mean?! Do I have a chance at this position???
Feedback please??

Sounds like they really liked you, but might be hesitant to hire you over someone with more experience. But, just be patient, if they don’t choose you for this position perhaps they will call you when something esle opens up. If not just move on to the next interview.
Well, I’m not an HR professional but I’ll give my opinion anyway. The way it sounds it as they said the other person has an edge on background. But I doubt they would have said that much if they weren’t interested. They may feel you are a better “fit” with your personality and such. To me it sounds just the way he said it. It went well, now you just need to see what happens.
Well, that was a very unusual call for an HR professional to make, to let you know that you’re close, but maybe not quite there. Generally, no phone calls are made until after the decision has been made. However, since they’ve indicated that you’re apparently a very close runner-up right now, you need to make them want to hire you over the “more qualified” person. You do have a “hidden” advantage because most employers will hire the person who is the best fit with the company in general over the person with better qualifications, especially if the more qualified person doesn’t have as good a personality. Remember, skills can be taught, but people skills generally can’t. You either get along or you don’t.
So call the Operations Director and let him/her know how much you enjoyed the interview and that you’d very much like to become a part of their team (use that phrase rather than “work for you” – it will come across better to the manager). You can also make a similar call, or send a thank you card, to the HR director. Basically, it’s up to you right now to go out and get that job!
Good luck!
Sounds like you have a very strong position. Don’t forget to mail that person a personal “thank you” note. If you don’t hear anything by Friday, give that HR Mgr a call and thank them on the phone and ask if you could provide any additional information that might sway their decision.
