As the Human Resource leader, your responsibilities range from directing the daily operations of the Human Resources Department, administrate HR policies, budgeting and supervise HR staff. In addition, your department will manage employee benefits, performance management, employee counseling, recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, worker’s compensation, employee health, meet compliance and HRIS programs. As HR Director, you act as the liaison to upper management and directly report to the President / CEO of most companies.
I would go to your boss first as it may put strain on your relationship with him if he percieved you going to HR first before speaking with him, as going behind his back.
I would also not mention that other people have gotten raises. This will not sway him and it puts you in a weird position as you don’t really know for sure yourself, who got what.
Just focus on yourself. Make him talk is way out of why you got no bonus. Don’t start telling him why you deserve one first. Tell him that you were really happy that he gave you such a great review and were curious as to what you could do in the future that would earn you a bonus next time. Tell him this particular aspect of your compensation is a very important validator to you personally, and to you it is very iimportat to know that you are not only meeting, but exceeding their expectations, as that is your goal.
If he fails to convince you in a clear, reasonable manner what you did do or what you could do, then say thank you and begin making plans for a job change immediately.
Approach him and ask if you can talk. Explain how you feel and that you want to know if a bonus is possible, what you would need to do differently. If you don’t ask why would he? Most don’t pay more than necessary and by necessary so far you are willing to work without one.
Be professional, complement working for him, stroke the ego a little and ask.
This is why people shouldn’t talk about their bonuses.
I would ask the person who gives out the bonuses! Just remember to keep your temper in check.
Did the assistants to the VPs get a bonus… probably not…you and they are worker bees…. the way things work in corporate the worker bees do the work….. management gets the praise… and the money….
My first question is do you normally get a bonus? Not all employees earn a bonus or are entitled. Yes you make a difference but is it a financial difference? Are you bringing in business. Assuming all is yes, then I would go to your boss but don’t be angry because you will put him on the defensive. Talk to him about performance. Note how good the company did and highlight how you helped him achieve his goals. Mention that he reflected that in his review of you. Then inquire if you would be receiving a bonus and if not what could you do to earn a bonus? If you don’t like the answer you could consider looking for employment elsewhere or talk to HR about it.
