As the Human Resource leader, your responsibilities range from directing the daily operations of the Human Resources Department, administrate HR policies, budgeting and supervise HR staff. In addition, your department will manage employee benefits, performance management, employee counseling, recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, worker’s compensation, employee health, meet compliance and HRIS programs. As HR Director, you act as the liaison to upper management and directly report to the President / CEO of most companies.
I agree with Jen. Experience really matters even when you are applying to an MBA program.
I don’t know which MBA programs in California have a good HR focus, but I think people focus on the quality of the MBA program in general instead of the quality of HR courses. Since it sounds like you don’t have any previous HR work experience your intern experience will be key. Even then unless you want to work for a HR consulting firm, a role in corporate HR is going to require that you pay your dues in the trenches. An internship with a lot of education behind it isn’t going to be enough to land a management position. This is coming from a HR manager with an MBA.
Also consider getting a Masters in Human Resources Management–a business degree with an emphasis on HR rather than an MBA that touches on HR.
