Nervous About Dinner With Ceo, Coo And Other Employer Dignitaries?
I have been selected to attend process improvement classes with for the next year at my job. I was hand picked by the VP of HR which I am on a couple committees with. After the first night of class, there will be a dinner. At a restaurant. I am nervous about going. Beside being in these classes with managers, and directors, the CEO and corporate officials will be there. I truly feel like I am not ready for the dinner. I have enough to deal with going to class with the managers and directors, but to sit there socially with the group. A couple of people I asked that are in the classes stated that they were not going to be able to attend. I told a couople of people I have an appointment that evening but I may be able to rearrange the time. The dinner is right after a day long class. 8:a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I really feel like passing this up.

Socializing with the brass is the best way to advance yourself. Don’t pass this up.
Yes. You’re nervous. Most people are anxious when in that situation for the first time. Just keep in mind that the higher ups were in your shoes at one time or another too. They were at entry level positions and had to sit with people they didn’t know at functions and figure out how to interact with them as well.
First off, take snacks to your classes. Make sure that you’re not overly starved when it comes time for dinner. Order something that’s easy to eat without a mess. Skip the pasta and go for the steak or the chicken. Take small bites and eat slowly. And above all, don’t drink alcohol. If everyone else is ordering drinks then have the bartender fix you a Baptist Mixer, a Coke in a highball glass.
While doing all of that interact in with others at your table. AVOID WORK RELATED TOPICS as best as you can. Tell them what you do but try to interact on a personal level. Discover their hobbies, their kids, their pets, their favorite vacations spots. And remember that asking open ended questions is your best way to engage people you don’t know. Consider yourself an interview and get them to talk about themselves. Because honestly, everyone loves to talk about themselves. And they’ll leave thinking they had the best conversation in the world with you, when you’ve divulged little about yourself.
And of course, be honest and sincere.
I say don’t talk about yourself but it is important to have a one minute speech that describes your best qualities. When asked you can pull it out and give a quick synopsis of your best qualities. Don’t have much education or work experience? Then mention what you do have, what exciting projects you’ve worked on, and the fact that you love “~insert hobby here~”. If they ask you more, then talk about it. But remember to return to them in conversation. You’ll feel more at ease. And as I said, they’ll remember you as a great conversationalist.
Good luck. And enjoy yourself.
This is your chance to stand out, go for it. Impress your CEO by giving him/her something to show, you care about their health. Listen more than you speak, do what is called the 75/25 rule in communication. speak 25% of the time and listen 75% of the time. Feel free to ask what their vision is for the company and how can you be of value to the company.
