Please Help Me With This Question? Someone? Anyone? Thanks?

shop floor workers use computers and robots.
There is a current labor shortage for many job openings, and the few individuals that do apply lack the necessary skills to work in teams, make decisions or use sophisticated technology.
What should you have done as the VP of HR Management to prepare for this problem?
What should you do to adress the problem today?
For the year 2015?

  • Well, I think that any company has a responsibility to look to their labor source, i.e., the local public schools and universities, and to help them understand the skills needed to be successfully employed. We cannot afford any longer to operate in isolation from each other, but rather there must be a school/business partnership for the benefit of all. This is an ongoing effort, and should have been in place and continue into the future.
As for dealing with the situation, the company needs to offer either education benefits – tuition assistance, etc., to employees that will help them get the skills necessary. They can be offered with strings – such as the employee works for x number of years after getting the assistance or they must pay it back – that is sound business to get a return on your investment. The company could even offer the training in house, on site, as a convenience to the employees.
