Should I Contact Employer Directly Or Go Through Hr Dept?

I applied for a job with a school district and went through their HR office. The position will report to a director of a certain department. I have the name and e-mail of the director who will hire for this position. Would it be taboo for me to contact the director through e-mail to express my interest and put me on the radar? Or should I only correspond with the HR department?

I would contact the director. You will be interviewing with him/her and HR is only there to process paperwork for the hire. (If you are hired) I would call the director. Good luck!
