I work in a laboratory (environmental testing industry) where the dress code is casual. I work within the IT department. The only people I see who wear business casual/professional dress on a constant basis is the director of the lab and the IT manager. The project managers and supervisors wear business casual when a client comes in or when they feel like dressing up. Mostly they wear jeans to work. Our corporate office and corporate staff is located in another state so corporate people only come in and they announce when they come in. How important is it for me to wear business casual? Do you honestly think I will “get ahead” if I wear business casual, etc/? Even the HR lady in our office wears casual clothing most of the time. Any advice to be given on this subject?

I was the Office Manager/HR Manager in an environmental lab. I would bet that everyone there but you, the accountant, and perhaps one or two others, is a scientist of some sort. They all walk to a different drummer and they don’t care what anyone looks like. Follow the code and wear business casual. Wear really old if you are actually working in a prep lab because you could get acid or acid residue on your clothes. Get a lab coat to wear when unexpected visitors come in. Everyone looks professional in a lab coat.
Here’s what I would ask myself in your situation:
Do I want to wear business casual? If so, then wear it. Looking neatly dressed (not overdressed) is definitely fine. But you should try and be consistent, don’t flip/flop back and forth. Make it your signature.
In the end, your abilities and performance will be what really matters. But if you dress on the upper end of what’s acceptable within your organization, it cannot hurt.
If I were you I’d wear what everybody else wears. If you try too hard then they won’t see you as a part of the team. No, I don’t think that you will get ahead if you wear business casual. You will get ahead if you work hard and if you are a team player.
sure why not
as long as its not showy if u no wat i mean
but wearing suits always helps
Physically packaging yourself by wearing business casual is a good idea, as this shows that you are not only respecting your bosses but the work and the company itself, dressing properly to work will make you look serious and professional it also creates a good impression. You can get additional information on this matter through the Internet, the title is “Dressing for success”. Though using proper clothes to work will surely gain you some good impression (respect even) this is not a sure fire solution to get ahead. Instead, dressing plus hard work and continuous skill and knowledge development will get you there.
