How Do You Deal With A “leader” That Refuses To Part With Information?

At my job we are working on a project that will span abot 4 years. The project manager (who is the Director of Ops) refuses to have regular meetings and provide information. I think of it as a death march- setting us up for failure. We all scramble for bits of info to complete our part, and without the whole integrated picture this can cause delays, frustration and misinformation. Any attempts to help the PM are brusquely ignored or waved away. I think that he does this to make the rest of us look like idiots, and he is the savior. In any case, going to HR does no good. I would like to deal with this in an open and honest fashion, trying to make him look bad will only backfire and not improve the situation.
Would appreciate you feedback on working with info-hoarders and people with power who are insecure in their role.

How Do I Deal With A Difficult Manager And Director?

I’m under a lot of stress at work because my manager keeps confronting me about a director I went to HR about almost a year ago – she was a very difficult person to work for and was very unethical at times – because I brought it to HR’s attention, she lost some of her power – my current manager was able to benefit from me doing this by becoming our new manager – but the thing is that I still have to work for this director indirectly and find that my manager takes her side when making desicions – my life is a living hell for the last year at work because it feels like I don’t have anyone on my side and I don’t know what to do – what would do???

How To Deal With An Unreasonable Bullying Boss?

have a new boss. He came in to our department and told us we’re no longer allowed a fridge. We’ve had a mini for 5 years, and got it with the approval of the previous director, and nobody has ever complained or had any issue with it.
First he said it was the cost to run it. A 2 cu. ft. fridge! It costs maybe $12/yr to run. We offered to pay. He squashed that. Then he said he was afraid we wouldn’t take our breaks. Ridiculous. Then he said he wanted us socializing with other workers during our breaks. Everybody else would rather relax, read, eat, and be left alone. What we do on our breaks is our business, anyway.
Then he said, well where does it stop, soon everybody will want a fridge. It hasn’t led to that in 5 years. Then he said has to be able to explain “in case anybody asks” why we have “all these appliances.” We are allowed a coffee pot, however, and a fan. Only one person in the department drinks coffee. According to my research, it takes as much or more energy to brew coffee twice a day than it does to run a small fridge all day. But she is allowed the comfort and convenience of having her beverage of choice close at hand. The rest of us, who enjoy cold drinks, are not allowed that anymore.
What kind of boss is maniacally concerned about where your food is kept and how and when you eat? We told him the fridge has been a non-issue all this time, and in fact it’s been good for our morale, and he said, “well, if it’s such a non-issue, why can’t you give it up?” We have no recourse, and if we went to human resources over his head, he would definitely retaliate.

How Should I Deal With Possible Pregnancy Discrimination At Work?

When I was six months pregnant, I was up for a promotion where I work (financial institution). I spoke to my direct supervisor about it, and she spoke to HR. My supervisor came back and told me that the VP, HR said that they didn’t want to promote me “right now” because new mothers often return to the work force “less focused on their jobs” and “not as motivated or ambitious” as they had been previously. I was upset, took some time to calm down, then pushed the issue. My supervisor agreed that this was pretty bogus, and took my promotion to HR again, as well as my new complaint about why I was turned down. The VP, HR said THIS TIME that I was not promoted because I had not met the criteria (pretty weak excuse– I did so!), and told my supervisor that she had taken what was said out of context, and that was not how the comments were intended. I really like where I work, and this was a shock to me. Now I’m on mat leave. What do I do? Do I pursue this at all? Pls HELP!
