I want to work in human resources. I have a degree in economics and I’m not sure how to proceed. I’ve been applying for jobs in the clerical field, accounting, and one position as a human resources clerk. Is it hard to get work in HR?

I am looking to career switch. I understand that you need to take a PRAXIS test to get certified. I am looking for certification instructions for a career switcher, what else will I need to do? For the state of VA and possibly FL

I had that same problem when I tried to break into HR years ago. Here are a few things you can do that worked for me:
- internships – see if you can do an internship with a company – you can get a lot of exposure to the different areas within HR by doing that first
- staffing – recruiting requires a lot of administrative support so there tend to be a lot of jobs in staffing. try to go for a recruiting coordinator job or HR Coordinator job. it will be grunt work and you’ll enjoy most of it b/c you’ll get the exposure you need.
- temp agency – see if you can find a job doing HR thru a temp agency – ANY HR experience is good HR experience, even if its a short term temporary assignment.
Don’t worry about what level you join in an HR group – if you’re good, you’ll move up that chain very quickly. I’ve been in HR now 10 years and I love every minute of it. Good luck!!

If so, was it hard finding a job after college? Please tell me about your experiences with it so far (good and bad). Any advice? Your location?

I already have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in Computer Information Systems. I want to get another business degree, but this time I want to major in Human Resources. How would that work out? I’m sure that some of the old business classes I took could be applied toward a new degree. Has anybody else gone through a similar situation?
