My wife has a JD from a top tier school, but has had a rough time in the legal job market (out of work for over a year). What she really likes is EEO work (studying employment law in school and interning at the EEOC). No business degree for her undergrad, though. She’s looked into MBA programs with an emphasis in HR work and HR masters. The problem is, we don’t live near them. We also don’t want to invest a lot of money as we feel the JD will always be her terminal degree, in a sense. We don’t want to add to her debt load in a significant way, especially since she is out of work, and we don’t want to get in a situation where we have to live apart so she can go to school. We’re really looking at eCornell’s certificate program. She’s leary about online stuff, and more so of certificates than straight out masters degrees. But, it is quite attractive for several reasons. It is reasonably cheap. It is short (around 6 months it would seem). Plus, it is connected in name to a good school. Under these circumstances, could this be just what she needs to segway out of being pegged as just a lawyer and into an HR/EEO specialist? She really likes the work, and wouldn’t mind focusing more on it with an educational boost, but it can be difficult to convince people you aren’t going to jump ship as soon as you can find an attorney position. So she’s also hoping the certificate will at least demonstrate a commitment to heading in this direction. Any thoughts would be appreciated. She’s very, very eager to return to work asap, though we are tied to our current, rural location due to my working situation as I just took a good job back in November of ’08.

I interviewed for a job as a Human Resources Assistant that was posted on Monster. At the first and second interviews the job duties were explained to me thoroughly and the job seemed like a great opportunity. Since there are only two people in HR at this company, myself and the HR VP, I was told that I would also be getting limited assistance from the mailroom clerk and the receptionist.
I got hired and on the first day of work the HR VP told me that my job title had been changed to HR Manager and that they would be able to give me 2K more a year in 6 months.
I realize that the Manager title carries more weight but does that mean that I automatically deserve a higher income? I was willing to do the job under the title of “Assistant”.

I have Master’s degree in Human Resources Management. I am 23 years old. I have worked in professional environments for at least 3 years. However, I have no experiences in HRM.
I recently took a Human Resources Consultant position with NGOs in Thailand. It is a short-term contract–possibly long term contract in social service fields (not sure if I want to work in social services). Currently, they only pay me 30,000 baht per month with no benefits because I have no experiences in HRM.
My priority duty is to write employee handbook and policies for the organization. I have to attend training workshops and attend monthly meetings with other NGOS on behalf of the regional director.
Most consultants are much older than me. But they have much higher salary (Started salary 3-5 times my salary for doing the same work) and they can work from home too.
Since the director said, I have done an amazing job. I think it is unfair for me to get paid much less than elder consultants….?!? Agree or Disagree?
Should I ask for a higher salary? Am I being underpaid?
***
P.S. I accepted 30,00 baht because I thought there are a great benefit. But I have no benefits at this point. I just want to have additional salary for health insurance and retirement plans. Is it reasonable?
