I had that same problem when I tried to break into HR years ago. Here are a few things you can do that worked for me:
- internships – see if you can do an internship with a company – you can get a lot of exposure to the different areas within HR by doing that first
- staffing – recruiting requires a lot of administrative support so there tend to be a lot of jobs in staffing. try to go for a recruiting coordinator job or HR Coordinator job. it will be grunt work and you’ll enjoy most of it b/c you’ll get the exposure you need.
- temp agency – see if you can find a job doing HR thru a temp agency – ANY HR experience is good HR experience, even if its a short term temporary assignment.
Don’t worry about what level you join in an HR group – if you’re good, you’ll move up that chain very quickly. I’ve been in HR now 10 years and I love every minute of it. Good luck!!

im pursuing a career in human resources and hopefully getting my masters well my moms friend does have a masters and earns about 90K a year and she live in miami…. now lets say i (god willing) get a masters degree and move to New York, LA, or Seattle (basically any major city) how much do you think i would be earning? i tried doing some research myself and no luck

is it a ph.d or some other doctoral degree?
I used to know a girl who is the town drunk. She drinks and drinks every night at all the bars so naturally knows all cops, firemen, town people etc etc although everyone knows she’s a whack. About 10 years ago I asked her what school she went to and she told me “Rutgers”, I never really believed her because she was always partying and never had a book. So as a goof about 2 years ago I saw her again and asked her the same question and she told me “Oh Syracuse”. She had just confirmed my suspicion to me – I knew she never went to college. She was a bookeeper for a few years. What aggravates me though is now she has a Director’s position in HR for a large building firm, she’s driving her Mercedes around and just fooling the world. I think she got a break in HR with another company so when she went to farm herself out as a top exec with a new company, they just bought her BS hook line and sinker! This makes me pretty mad – what about you?
I had an interview two weeks ago, (my third interview for this position) and the person I interviewed with was on vacation for one of those weeks. I am trying to follow up on the interview because I want this job SO BAD. However, the person I am trying to call is a Human Resources director, and he never seems to answer his phone. I’m not sure if he’s screening, or just really busy. Should I keep calling? Send an e-mail? How do I get around this? Also, I don’t want my number to show up multiple times because I don’t want to look like a stalker. If I call the main desk and am transferred, does the number show up??
