Urine The Fridge. What Do You Think?
You’re in the fridge, get it?
The other day I put a urine sample cup in the fridge at work. It was full of apple juice with some yellow food coloring (very nice effect). Anywho, the HR VP hit the roof, along with any number of people in the building. An e-mail went out asking for the person responsible to come forward, (which I did not do nor do I have any intention of doing) so HR could resolve the situation. In other words, fire me. After no one came forward they announced that a hazmat team was going to brought in to dispose of the container. I mean, come on! Of course, that never happened. The janitor put on a rubber glove and threw it away.
The name on the sample was fake, but really funny, Penelope Persons (PP). Since this was obviously a joke, do you think that HR went too far, or was I doing something completely out of line?

That joke crossed the line with some folks. Seriously, some people are so uptight!
Now that I’ve had kids and changed diapers, a cup of pee doesn’t seem like a big deal. I’ve thrown out old rotting food before from company fridges and think that’s much worse from a health perspective!

unless you work in a small office where practical jokes are the norm, you were out of line. how would anyone know it was a joke? and even then, that it wasn’t real?

I have to say that it was you that was out of line. In a company, things need to be professional to a certain degree….no matter how casual the dress and informalness may be. It’s still a place of work. Think that some people are very sensitive and maybe there are some germaphobes there….they could get violently sick just thinking about it. You have to be more professional and treat the work place as if you would a job interview. If someone did that the first day of work at your company, would you fire them or have them pay a serious penalty for the situation. Look at how it escalated. Now, looking back do you think that it was wise of you to do that at a place of employment. At a fraternity, funny. College buddies, funny. Place of work, not funny. NYC airports, not funny. Get the picture? I hope so. Best wishes and take more care.

In todays world, with disease and terrorists, you are not acting like a person who is old enough or mature enough to even be working. That is a practical joke for a boy of about twelve years of age. You better hope that no one figures out that you did this, or your bosses should have the right to fire you for stupidity, if nothing else. Keep your juvenile jokes out of the workplace. I can see the humor in it and it would be great on a sit-com, you should write, but at work, in a real situation, it was rather raunchy.
Now you know some of your co-workers won’t bring lunches anymore if they are wise, because they don’t know it is a joke. Others might think of and just feel sick when they go to get their lunch. Ofcourse, you know instead of the janitor, they might have called the police and then where would everything be at?
Do you think they would be amused? I am not getting down on you, I just want you to think things through a little further before you do them. Now it is likely the company probably thinks they have a very disgruntled worker and their hands who may do worse. Easily that could make them keep a closer eye on everyone and on their work. I would be treading very lightly and with no more practical jokes. I also would not tell a soul that I did that, because face it, even if it only says this place is boring, there is a message there even if you did not realize you had a subconscious message that you wanted to put out there. You don’t want them firing you or sending you to the shrink or something. Best of luck in the future.
