Additional rights other than what may be already available under the federal and or state laws. Right to negotiate and be able to get better working conditions, wages, insurance, retirements, sick leave benefits and job security.
You cannot be fired just because your boss does not like you and must be promoted if you are the best qualified; seniority counts for something. If employee does something wrong the discipline must be proportional. Many other procedural rights. Plus, the union can fight for you in the courts when case is significant and necessary.
Now a days many jobs that could not have unions, do; including engineers, lawyers and administrative law judges. Also, unions have PACs (Political Action Committee) to influence the congress. Corporations, obviously, always did.

I’m a union member in in “at will” state (Texas)…that means even if you don’t join you are still a BUM (bargaining unit member) and as such receive union representation when necessary…union member benefits are many (we’re partners with the AFL-CIO) but our strongest selling point is disability insurance that air traffic controllers can’t get anywhere else…also even though this is a “at will” state union members and BUMs can’t be fired without just cause
