It's either something you love and do great with, or it's something you hate and should leave. You can't really force yourself to like programming. It's a certain mindset you have to be in, you actually have to be excited about what you're doing and feel accomplished about getting the computer to bend to your will (so to speak). And if that joy isn't there for you, perhaps it's better if you don't do it as a job. I don't think anyone can really answer your question as to whether or not you're on the right path. That's completely your choice. But you did ask for advice so I'll tell you some advice I got from Richard Prior during a comedy skit. "Life is too short. Life is too short to be worrying about what other people think you should do. You should go out and enjoy life. Because life is just too short to not enjoy it." And as far as being an alien, I don't think you're ever prepared for that. Especially when you grow up somewhere else. You should be prepared for culture shock and forget everything you've ever learned in your current country. Because there is a BIG chance what you know now, doesn't apply there. But you'll get used to it eventually, it just takes time. My dad once said that everyone in the world is pretty much the same, just a little bit of difference here and there to keep the mix up. He was in the USAF and traveled around the world, so I believe what he said on faith. I've personally never even traveled out of my state of Virginia since I was 5 years old.
