I totally disagree…many mid-level positions are requiring candidates with either a PHR or SPHR certificate. Just like a college degree shows the interviewer you have taken extra steps to invest in yourself, acquire knowledge that may be useful in other areas, show a certain degree of strategic thinking ability, etc….a HR certificiate is one more piece of paper that shows the interviewer you have better skills than the next candidate…
If you have no undergrad degree as well in something, then your certificate will get you a secretarial position, at best, in a large human resources office. Certificates are good only if
– you are okay with an assistant’s level position
– the certificate compliments a full degree in another area of expertise, OR
– you have *many* years of work experience in a particular area other than what you are getting the certificate in
