Why Do People Think They Are Worth Much More Than They Are?
Not personally, but as in the job seeking business? I’m a Human Resources Director and of course,I’m in charge of all the hiring. Last week,I held interviews for several Data Entry postions. It’s not a glamourous job but it’s real easy. All you have to do is take your stack of paperwork and enter it into a computer. Here are some stories of the people who I interviewed:
Keep in mind that the state I live in,the minimum wage is $6.55/hr
I had one young lady come in,18 years old, just out of high school, and wanted $12/hr
I had a young man,23 years old,was in the military for 4 years and wanted $32,000/year
Another young man,has an associates in criminal justice, wanted $40,000 a year, which is a little less than what I make(been with the company 7 years and have a Bachelors in Human Resource)
You should have seen their faces when I told them that the most we could pay was $7/hr to someone with experience

As an HR manager myself I can tell you I’ve always seen this. I do think there is an entitlement mentality in this country that brings you a lot of this at all levels. We want to offer a programmer a job at 70K but he wants 120! so it happens at all levels.
My only advice is on those low end job postings I would put a pay rate or range on the job itself.
Try putting it toward the top of the listing to keep people from reading the just the title and submitting their resume.
Did you note what the job pays in your advertisement? Seems like you could have saved both yourself and the applicants a lot of time. I think a lot of times people ask for the amount they need to pay their bills, regardless of what the employer wants to pay them.
Entitlement
unfortunately 20 somethings seem to have this sense of entitlement
they are egoists
A man or woman worthy of there hire is worth the pay. But a person not worthy of there pay is not worth one red cent. So if they are worth there pay in what they do in Data Entry. And have the qualifications then they should get paid for there learning abilities. Those who do not .. have so much experience in certain jobs or Data Entry should not get the pay they expect.
I understand your dilemma on wages. Some people ask far more then what they think they are worth. And are money hungry people. These are what you call wishful wishers who wish they could get the wages they think they deserve.
Regrading you and your job. Ok so you a Human Resource Director. And you got a bachelor degree in Human Resources. And you push paper work through a computer only. Sounds like anybody could push papers through a computer .. that had no degree just doing that. I mean you act because you have a high degree anybody should not have a higher wage then you because they do not have a bachelor degree. I have seen people with degrees who know absolutely nothing compared to the common worker. Not saying this is all the case mind you. But some I feel who had degrees were somewhat stupid. So I think it depends on what you know and how to do it. And maybe you are very smart. But quit crying cause someone makes more money then you. Maybe they have more knowledge then you do. And personally anybody in the hiring departmnet think they are over rated in there job they do. I have seen this a lot.
I know what you mean. We’ve interviewed a woman who wanted to have special hours, she wanted to leave 1 hour earlier then everyone else. (She asked that during an interview) We asked why thinking maybe her daycare closes early or something and she said because this is the quality of life she wants!!!! How can you say that during an interview and on top of that during a recession who put thousands of people out of job! I’m an executive in this company and I do not have to luxury of leaving before everyone else, in fact I get to work late pretty much all the time.
We’ve posted a few jobs for data entry, you should have seen the number of resumes we got from people with BA in science or music! they expect to be paid for a qualification that has nothing to do with the job we’re offering.
I have no idea of what’s in their mind. Some times I think it’s a question of generation. Is it possible younger people won’t start at the bottom as we did,
Bear in mind that at least part of what somebody asks for is an act of negotiation. Their initial numbers may not be exactly what they want.
There is also the underlying factor of how much they need to earn in order to pay their bills. This varies from person to person of course.
Lastly, people may have looked online and seen numbers for their specific profession that may not be realistic.
Personally, I don’t understand how anybody can survive on $40k per year. For sure it wouldn’t be possible to pay rent and eat in any reasonably sized city.
