As the Human Resource leader, your responsibilities range from directing the daily operations of the Human Resources Department, administrate HR policies, budgeting and supervise HR staff. In addition, your department will manage employee benefits, performance management, employee counseling, recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, worker’s compensation, employee health, meet compliance and HRIS programs. As HR Director, you act as the liaison to upper management and directly report to the President / CEO of most companies.
HR has traditionally been a department to avoid, for at least the past 40 years, cross corporations. Historically if you do some reading you will realize why. People are not promoted out of HR to lead the company. People that are problems in other departments are frequently “promoted into HR”. HR is there to protect the company, enforce HR policy (which is written for the company) not the employee. That is why HR is disliked by employees, and not respected by management outside HR. Working with a small software development company, I was able to know each individual. They trusted me to be fair. Since the company valued the employees my key role was employee retention. Keep the knowledge and skills. However, this must be done with the Company AND the employees in mind. Its a fine balancing act. Some respect is gained in being fair and keeping your integrity.
Training employees and management is key. Send them emails on staff related matters. Conduct weekly or monthly management meetings to discuss issues – prevention. Stop problems before they arise – and respect should follow….
